Traffic in Lagos is an issue that is always frustrating, exasperating and amazing. As much as we hate to get stuck in traffic whether going home from work or going for a meeting or a business appointment,we always seem to find in ourselves under this evil spell like a man stuck with a nagging wife. As much as traffic is frustrating and looks unavoidable,a lot of it could be avoided,yes it can.

One of the main causes of traffic amongst other reasons like bad roads,traffic light (which is another topic all together), accidents, flood, Danfo nuisance and too many cars, another cause of traffic is the IMPATIENCE of Lagos road users.

A typical example is a road that should normally have 3 lanes becomes 6 lanes because everyone is in a hurry and wants to move at the same time. This would go on for a while until they get to a point where the road narrows to what should be a lane or 2 probably due to an intersection or the topography of the road, people begin to scramble to return back to the original 2 lanes.

As this is happening, people who have been on the original lane refuse to give others on the “illegal” lanes access hence a lot of begging,struggling and accidents ensue. While some people will even beg for access, Danfo drivers will just rush into the road like they own the road and you don’t stand a chance.

Then there’s the woman who won’t allow anyone whether a man or another woman like herself enter her front because she feels you are about to cheat her. There’s also the pedestrian trying to cross the road especially at place where there are no pedestrian bridges and no one wants to be patient enough to allow them pass because you could incur the wrath of the other cars behind you or get robbed at gun point or the few minutes you waited to allow them pass might cost you hours of traffic. Yes on Lagos roads, a few minutes could determine if how long you stay in traffic or not.

All in all. I still believe that if we exercise a little patience with one another while driving, a lot of traffic hold ups will be averted because things will be done orderly and everyone gets where they are going in good time.
